The Nova Commission began as the Intergalactic Police. The IGP was an organization created by the Elders of Dimension X to protect the Eden-worlds, which are basically nature preserves. Eventually, the IGP took on more diverse duties as Dimension X grew populous: managing interplanetary traffic spaceways, enforcing colonization laws, stopping rebellions, managing emergency relief, guarding dignitaries, transporting prisoners; basically, the IGP was in control of every policing function in Dimension X.
Finally, the IGP got so big that they needed some kind of control. The Nova Commission was formed to head the IGP, govern it, and delegate duties. The IGP was slimmed down a great deal, and new bodies were created to handle the various duties.
Nova Squadron was put in charge of special services and covert activities. All members are required to have primary education on their homeworlds and to attend the Nova Military Academy for 2 years. Academy graduates, in return for their education, are expected to serve a 3 year minimum in active service of the Nova Squadron.
Eco Corps was put in charge of safe-guarding the Eden-worlds: making sure that nothing interfered with their development, protecting the wildlife, keeping out poachers, and so on.
Intergalactic Jetstream manages space traffic and monitors all registered vessels.
Border Brigade enforces the laws placed on colonies. It also is responsible for quelling any uprisings.
Karma Kops are in charge of emergency relief programs: evacuations, distributing food and water, etc.
Intergalactic Police were now responsible only for prisonor management in the Intergalactic Prisons, and protecting and escorting the dignitaries who travel throughout Dimension X.
Members of the Nova Commission and its various branches come from all parts of DImension X. Just look at the Nova Posse to see the variety of races and types of people who come to the Commission.
However, it is only recently that females have begun to hold high positions in Nova Commission branches. Luna Azul was the first female to be promoted to commander, and was the first female ever appointed to the Nova Commission. However, many of the newer recruits to the Nova Commission jobs have been more open-minded than in the past, so we can assume that conditions for females will continue to improve.
Each branch of the Nova Commission has its own uniform.
Nova Squadron crew members wear tight uniforms of blue with yellow piping and gloves. The Nova Squadron symbol is worn on the right shoulder. The boots are brown, and officers often wear matching vests, which bear the symbol on the left side. Squadron members have no need of armor, because much of their work involves piloting starships. They might be equipped with light armor on covert indoor operations, however.
Eco Corps officers wear loose, flowing garments of green with blue piping. Both are common vegetation colorings, and the Corps members blend right in to their surroundings.
Intergalactic Jetstream officers wear tight orange uniforms, colored after flame.
Border Brigade wear an exoskeleton of polyzerkonium, an almost inpenetrable substance. This is required because of the dangerous work they do in hand-to-hand combat.
Karma Kops wear red, because it is easily visible to the people they are trying to help. As emergency workers, it is important that people recognize them immediately.
Intergalactic Police wear an exoskeleton of polyzerkonium, an almost inpenetrable substance. This is required because they often face danger of being shot at.
Nova Squadron crew members carry the most diverse array of weaponry. Their ships, of course, are supplied with laser cannons and such. The standard issue weapon is a hand-held automatic pulser, or AP. It comes in three different sizes and powers: AP-14, AP-26, and AP-52. Officers are entitled to carry pulser rapid-fire rifles, or PR-87. There are also a variety of special weapons which may be assigned to crew members on covert missions. Crew may not carry special weapons unless authorized by their commanding officer.
Eco Corps carry stun pistols and rifles for control of wildlife. They are not permitted to use weapons which may harm the life-forms on the Eden-worlds.
Intergalactic Jetstream officers do not carry weapons.
Border Brigade and Intergalactic Police carry AP-26's. They may be assigned special weapons for a particular mission, however.
Karma Kops do not carry weapons. If they are placed on a planet where the situation is or may get violent, there are always Nova Squadron, Border Brigade, or IGP people around to protect them.
The Nova Commission belongs to the Intergalactic Brotherhood of Workers, the most powerful union in Dimension X. Nova Commission wages, benefits, and pension plans are considered the best in the galaxy.
